NHS to Use AI Technology for Faster, More Accurate Fracture Detection

Rayvolve has been recognized by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a key AI technology to help healthcare professionals diagnose bone fractures in X-rays across the NHS. The AI solution encompasses four verticals: AZtrauma, AZchest, AZmeasure, and AZboneage. Among these, AZtrauma specifically focuses on detecting fractures, dislocations, and joint effusions. Clinically validated, the solution has demonstrated its ability to tackle one of the biggest challenges in medical imaging—ensuring fractures are diagnosed quickly and accurately, especially during time-pressured workloads in busy clinical environments.

Fractures are among the most frequent diagnoses missed or delayed upon hospital admission, with estimates ranging from 2% to greater than 10%. These delays can lead to patient harm, including complications, and a greater treatment burden. Rayvolve, acting as a crucial aide, provides radiologists and clinicians with precise fracture detection, helping ensure that fractures are not overlooked. Its AI algorithm is designed to consistently deliver accurate diagnoses, reducing the potential for human error in high-pressure situations.

Mark Chapman, the director of HealthTech at Nice, said: “Every day across the NHS, thousands of images are interpreted by expert radiologists and radiographers, but there is a high vacancy rate within these departments across the country and more support is needed to manage their workload. “These AI technologies are safe to use and could spot fractures which humans might miss given the pressure and demands these professional groups work under.”

The NHS aims to use AI to secure better patient outcomes by improving the efficacy and safety of care, especially in early treatment stages, when timely intervention can make a significant difference. For more in-depth information, you can read the full article here.
