ECR: Addressing Radiology’s Global Challenges with Artificial Intelligence

Recognized as one of the biggest international conferences in diagnostic and interventional radiology, the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2025 will open its doors to medical imaging specialists under the motto: “Planet Radiology” on February 26.

The Growing Global Shortage of Radiologists

Hospitals, care centers, and trauma centers face mounting pressures due to increasing patient caseloads, combined with a deficit in radiology workspace capacity. Both in the European Union (EU) and worldwide, recent statistics have shown considerable imbalances in the distribution and availability of radiologists as described below.

  • Radiologist-to-population ratio: There are about 13 radiologists per 100,000 people in Europe. In contrast, the UK has only 8.5 radiologists per 100,000 people.1
  • Radiology Workforce Deficit: The UK has 30% fewer clinical radiology consultants than the National Health Service (NHS) requires. That means there are 1,962 vacant positions. Experts say this gap is expected to widen to 40%, or 3,670 vacant positions, by 2028.2
  • Radiologist Distribution: Worldwide, there are about 345,475 radiologists or an average of 45 radiologists per million. High-income nations (U.S., Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand) account for 33% of the world’s radiologists serving only 16% of the world population. In these regions, the radiologist density averages about 97.9 per million population.3
  • Projected Shortages: In the United States, data from the Association of American Medical Colleges predict a shortfall of between 37,800 and 124,000 physicians by 2034, with radiology among the most affected medical specialties.4

AZmed: A Leader in AI-Driven Radiology Solutions

AZmed is an industry leader in artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for medical imaging and is relied upon by healthcare professionals in more than 2,500 facilities spanning 55+ countries. Its Rayvolve® AI Suite, which now includes advanced products: AZtrauma, AZchest, AZmeasure, and AZboneage (available soon) focuses on maximizing workflows, increasing detection rates, and enhancing accuracy. With all this, the team visiting the ECR looks forward to empowering radiologists and elevating patient care to a new standard.

  • AZtrauma: AI aid for the detection of fractures, dislocations, and joint effusions on X-rays. This solution is both FDA-cleared and CE-marked, approved for use in the adult and pediatric population.
  • AZchest: Automatically classifies, detects, and reports the key cardiac and lung abnormalities on X-rays. The CE-marked solution is validated for use in both adult and pediatric radiography and will soon be available in the US.
  • AZmeasure: Delivers automated characterization of osteo-articular measurements, including lengths and angular positions.
  • AZboneage: Provides advanced automated calculation of the bone age based on the Greulich & Pyle method and will soon be CE-marked.
